Hockey Read moreHockey CloseHockey The game of hockey started at St John’s in 1931, with a total of 76 pupils participating. The game was played on an ash field and then moved onto grass in the early 1940’s. Hockey continued to be played on grass and the St John's College fields were used for many years in hosting the traditional Aitken Tournament quarter & semi-finals. In 2001 St John's acquired one of the first synthetic surfaces in Johannesburg on the old Rugby B field. This has been an outstanding facility ever since, contributing to the increased development of hockey at the school, and in the province, with St John's becoming one of the top hockey-playing schools in Gauteng and arguably the country. The original surface was recently replaced with a world-class blue surface following the international trend and has also become our National men’s and women’s teams training ground on occasions when in the province. Hockey is run during the winter season and currently, St John’s College has 20 teams participating in the boys’ school league The large number of boys currently participating in the sport exceeds all those of our rival schools. The school regularly competes against other schools with matches being played on Wednesdays and Saturdays. St John’s participates in all of the top hockey festivals in and around the country. St John’s is regularly one of the main contenders for the annual Aitken & Boden tournament which consists of an open and U15 section. This tournament is regarded as the largest schoolboy tournament in S.A. with 48 schools in the open section and 32 in the U15 section. St John’s consistently finishes in the top four in both these divisions. St John’s is fortunate to have an outstanding coaching structure and complemented by outstanding coaches. All the A teams are being coached by staff who have either played, coached, or are currently involved in hockey at either provincial or national level.
